At your initial new patient appointment, our hygienist will review your health history, take any x-rays that are needed, and chart your gum health. You will receive a comprehensive exam by Dr. Mills, during which you will have an opportunity to discuss your dental goals and needs so that we can determine the appropriate care for your treatment moving forward. Before you leave, we will schedule your first cleaning appointment (typically within just a couple weeks) at a time that works best for you!

Common questions from new patients:

Common first appointment questions at Smilecraft Dental in Southern Maine.
  • We will gladly submit claims on your behalf to whatever dental insurance provider you may have. However, please note that we are only considered an “in-network” provider for Northeast Delta Dental’s premier plan.

Whatever portion of your treatment cost that is not covered by your insurance provider becomes your responsibility, as outlined in our financial policy. (You can always call your dental insurance provider to inquire about what portion would be covered for routine care or restorative treatment as every insurance plan is different.) You will receive an invoice for whatever costs are not paid by your insurance company.

  • We do require dental x-rays for our patients. If you have had these done in the past year, you can have your previous dental office send them directly to us. We use x-rays to see what’s going on beneath the surface of the tooth, under and old crown or filling, and even what’s happening under the gums where it’s not visible when looking in the mouth. As a dental care provider we have a responsibility to ensure that you are looking out for your oral health and catch anything before it becomes a larger problem. We take this role seriously and we believe x-rays are necessary to provide our patients with the best and most comprehensive care. Bite-wings are required every 12 months and a FMX (full mouth series) is required every 4 years. We are constantly improving our technology as it becomes available to us.

  • Our first appointment is geared towards taking records and documenting baseline information about your dental health. We will spend time talking with you about your goals and your previous experience. We will gather as much information as possible and then map out an individualized treatment plan for you. Each person may require something different, so we use your new patient exam to determine the type of cleaning and cadence that would best suit you! Before you leave the office, we will confirm your first cleaning appointment (usually within a couple weeks of your new patient appointment.)
